Prominently preferential bike parking incentivizes drivers to ride bikes and conveniently park right next to Sprouts Farmers Market entrances

This is a BikeRackMap.com major bike parking improvement project that sets a new high bar for excellent bike parking in Las Vegas.  Our Grand Opening celebration will be held on the first Saturday of Bike Month, 5/3 at 1 PM, at 8441 Farm Road.

Last summer, a single cyclist in Northwest Las Vegas used BikeRackMap.com to quickly create a 16 square mile bike parking map and census that revealed there were over 22,000 vehicle parking spaces and only 43 bike parking locations, 93% of which were rated zero or one out of five stars. The census identified major opportunities for improvement and we are proud to announce that the Sprouts Farmers Market at 8441 Farm Road is our first major bike parking improvement project!

This location previously had two separate “wave” racks shunted to the farthest ends of the building, as far away from the two entrances as possible, positioned against the building, and painted black which made them out-of-sight, out-of-mind and effectively invisible.  People had to work to find these racks, and those who found them were sorely disappointed.  These racks are rated one out of five-stars in our system which means bare minimum.

Wave racks are prohibited in most cycling-encouraging cities because they are poorly designed and unintuitive.  When used as designed, they are notoriously known as wheel-benders because the front wheel is inserted into the wave putting the bike’s entire weight onto the front wheel in a highly unstable manner that can bend the wheel.

A basic requirement of good bike racks is the ability to lean the bike against the rack with two points of frame contact. This provides intuitive simplicity, stability and security when using a “U” lock combined with a cable through the front and rear wheels. The wave racks deterred people from cycling.

It’s a joy to roll up, lean the frame against these solid square tube racks with two stable points of contact, and easily attach a "U" lock and cable to securely lock the frame and wheels!

These four-star racks would be five-star if they were covered to protect from the elements and the hot desert sun.

Sprouts Farm road shines like a beacon

Sprouts Farmers Market Farm Road store now shines like a bright yellow beacon to all cyclists, with two pods of four individual racks placed next to each entrance and generously spaced to potentially park two bikes per rack, depending on bike accessories and dimensions.  They are designed to accommodate all bikes, including electric cargo bikes up to 8 1/2 feet long.

These new racks are strong, secure, bright yellow, and book-ended with high visibility yellow certified BikeRackMap.com “Excellent Bike Parking” signs that encourage all cyclists to add their ratings and reviews at BikeRackMap.com.

Every person driving by, entering or exiting the store will marvel at Sprouts commitment to cycling, health and well-being, and the amazing convenience of parking right next to the entrance instead of parking a car. Having the racks visible to everyone entering and exiting the store is also the best possible theft and vandalism prevention.

BikeRackMap.com envisions a connected network of four and five-star bike parking spanning the Las Vegas valley as a key to cycling becoming a viable form of active transportation.

Our mission is to work with government agencies, organizations, businesses and property managers to improve existing racks, as well as certify and promote four and five-star bike parking locations.

We call on everyone to help us improve bike parking by rating and reviewing locations wherever you see them.  It only takes a few seconds using your phone, and your feedback can help provide valuable insights that lead to major bike parking improvement projects like Sprouts’ Farmers Market at 8441 Farm Road in Las Vegas!

  1. Every store should have such bright, visible, intuitive bike parking. These new bike racks at Sprouts are fabulous and should encourage folks to choose a bike for a trip to this store. Well done.

  2. Great work to BikeRackMap.com and Sprouts for bringing light to the need for great racks and following through with their installation! I wish more stores would take this incredible need to heart and make supporting biking a priority!

  3. Wow, those are amazing bike racks. I wish I had those where I shop. Mostly, I need to tie up to a sign pod, usually for handicap parking sign since they tend to be located near front door.

  4. WOW!! Those new bike racks look incredible! I’m jealous that we don’t have anything like that in my Northern California neighborhood. Kudos to BikeRackMap.com for your successful advocacy in getting these beautiful racks installed in Las Vegas.

In addition to opening up some very useful shopping (transportation) opportunities for your local community, I’m struck with how well these racks fit in with Sprouts “brand”. Sprouts is all about healthy food and, by inference, a healthy lifestyle. If I was “Sprouts”, I’d want to install these at ALL my stores. Then, I’d leverage the heck out of them in my advertisements, distinguishing my stores and incentivising health-minded people to ride to my stores to shop. I might even start a bike shopper’s club with special offers (20% off energy bars if we’re bagging them in your pannier). Yeah… I’m jealous!

    1. Thanks Steve!

Just to clarify, BikeRackMap.com not only advocated for the racks, we conceived, proposed and led the project, including designing, planning, purchasing, installing and certifying the racks as a BikeRackMap.com four-star Excellent Bike Parking location. We also worked with the City of Las Vegas, Clark County, and organizations throughout the area to raise awareness and promote the racks as setting a new high bar for excellent bike parking.

BikeRackMap.com envisions a connected network of four and five-star bike parking spanning the Las Vegas valley, and nationally, as a key to cycling becoming a viable form of active transportation, and we are ready to work with government agencies, organizations, businesses and property managers to improve existing racks, as well as certify and promote four and five-star bike parking locations.

  5. These look great! I will have to make my next grocery run on the bike knowing that my bike will be that much safer. Its great to see businesses taking such a detailed look at what can really do for their customers and community.

  6. We are so excited to work with Craig from BikeRackMap.com to support our community with alternative transportation that shares our values of healthy eating, healthy living. We look forward to joining the Vegas community in other locations that will make the shopping experience at Sprouts’s amazing and somewhere you can safely bike to and enjoy!
